Once again many Congratulations to Germanys two top ladies on their success in 2010 Masters – I wish Sabine and Simone all the best for the defence of their titles and Manuel a podium position in 2012.

I’m looking forward to seeing lots of you there – as I shall be going!!!

The “Reigning Champions” Paderborn has their first group match at 13:00 against the local Gothenburg Club whereas Worms start their campaign at 17:00 and play against Mikkeli Squash Club from Finland. Both today’s group matches should be relatively light warm-ups for the German Clubs and Worms seeded on two in group B and Paderborn on five in group D then have the rest of the day free.

Playing today for the Black and White team at the main Landala centre are Davide Bianchetti, Marcus Berrett, Jens Schoor and Carsten Schoor. In the second match tomorrow morning at 10:00 O’clock our fifth member of the team Daniel Hoffmann shall get his turn to play and this match takes place on the Glass show court at Nordstan Shopping Centre. Michael Zehe is also here to cheer his team on and has become our official photographer for this event.

Since I arrived here on Monday I have been putting comments on my Twitter and Facebook accounts and here for the Squashnet readers are my comments below so far:

My Ryanair 737 touches down 10mins before schedule @ the Gothenburg City airport. Step out to clear blue skies and18 degrees! It is really good to be in Sweden.

Picked up with the shuttle bus by Robert from Landala Squash http://www.landalasquash.se and whisked off to the hotel in the city centre.

I have just seen my first cloud in Gothenburg but its still blue skies and “shorts” weather :0) Also just looked at the Glass show court in the middle of the large shopping centre next door to the hotel. Looks impressive but with the height of the lights it is clearly not a “LOB” court! also I’ve just bumped into the Paderborners’ Simon Rösner, Lennart & Lars Osthoff.

All my team have now arrived and we are finally complete: 1. Davide Bianchetti 2. Marcus Berrett 3. Jens Schoor and with Daniel Hoffmann or Carsten Schoor I have the choice who then plays on four. Let the battle commence and the best team win.

Why?

Although our sport is one of the most competitive and demanding; physically, mentally, tactically it really is not able to compete with the show and flair of so many other sports. I recently heard how Squash had presented itself in comparison with other sport arts at the World Games (the alternative Olympics). “That ours lacked appeal and passion outside the court”. One realizes that changing the scoring system to make Squash more interesting is good but what our sport needs is a new dynamic in its presentation at all levels.

The money that some people believe should be put into bribes would be better invested into a study of how Squash can be made appealing to the general public and not only to our current squash community. We have modern glass courts that can be used the world over but just putting one in a famous position and thinking that this is very special is incredibly naive.

People / Spectators want:
• Entertainment
• Enjoyment
• Action / Thrills
• *SHOW*

Only when Squash starts to change its complete image could the platform be created where the sport is:
• Once again fashionable
• On everybody’s lips
• Played by the masses
• As desirable to the IOC as tennis, badminton and table tennis.

Maybe Squash should use the “Gladiatorial aspect” as the setting is perfect: The Arena, two athletes fighting to the death, maybe using this approach it would bring the crowds into our Squash Coliseums?

Finally on a personal note I am a big fan of Glass Courts, so many thanks to ASB and others for their developments and achievements in changing our sport. The first to eleven, two clear scoring system has also made a immense change to Squash and this also gets a big thumbs-up from me.

Ich habe gleich während des Frühstücks am Samstagmorgen mit Davide Bianchetti gesprochen und ihm mitgeteilt, dass er wahrscheinlich spielen muss. David Palmer habe ich erklärt, dass er nur in den Court gehen darf, wenn er sich 100 %ig fit fühlt. 10 Minuten vor Abgabe der Mannschaftsmeldung hat David mit rasiertem und getaptem Bein einen letzten Versuch unternommen, war aber zu unsicher, ob er das Spiel durchhalten konnte.

So kam Plan B (Bianchetti) zum Tragen. Davide hat ein geniales Spiel abgeliefert mit guten Hinweisen von David Palmer, wie er gegen Ong Beng Hee spielen sollte, und von mir, wie er mit den Schiedsrichtern umgehen sollte. Dass Davide – WRL 29 – einen Sieg gegen Bengy – WRL 14 – holen konnte, zeigt was für ein toller Mannschaftsspieler er ist und wir sind sehr, sehr stolz und glücklich, ihn in unserem Team Black+White Worms zu haben.

• Erstens habe ich mich beim Training verletzt und mein rechtes Knie und Sprunggelenk lädiert.

• Daher konnte ich mich kaum bewegen und auf gar keinen Fall Auto fahren.

• Zweitens kam meine bessere Hälfte ins Krankenhaus und musste unendlich viele Untersuchungen über sich ergehen lassen (Verdacht auf Gallenstein), bevor sie wieder nach Hause durfte.

• Während dieser Zeit ist mein Mobiltelefon verlorengegangen – inzwischen habe ich es wieder gefunden!

• Mein PC musste zum Onkel Doktor, weil mit dem Internet Browser etwas nicht stimmte und nach drei Jahren Betrieb Zeit für ein Check-Up und ein Spring-Clean war.

• Seit fünf Tagen hat mich auch noch eine böse Erkältung erwischt und selbst wenn ich mich bewegen könnte, hatte ich überhaupt keine Lust dazu.

In der kommenden Woche muss ich mich noch schonen, aber ab Donnerstag kehre ich zurück ins Leben und fahre nach Krefeld zu den Deutschen Einzelmeisterschaften. And I am back online :0)

Vor diesem System haben die Turnierveranstalter von Ranglisten-Turnieren selbst die Auslosung vorgenommen. Hier gab es manchmal ein paar seltsame Auslosungen, die niemand nachvollziehen konnte – besonders in bestimmten Anlagen kam dies immer wieder vor. Deshalb war zunächst es gut, etwas zu ändern! Aber war die obenstehende Lösung die richtige? Leider sehen wir nach und nach immer weniger Teilnehmer bei den Ranglisten-Turnieren – möglicherweise deshalb?

Bei allen großen PSA, Britischen und World Turnieren wird immer das gleiche System eingesetzt:

1. Position 1 und 2 werden oben und unten gesetzt
2. Position 3 und 4 werden mittig zugelost
3. Position 5 bis 8 werden an die vorgegebenen 4 Plätze zugelost und kommen erst im ¼ Finale gegen 1 bis 4
4. Position 9 bis 16 werden an die vorgegebenen 8 Plätze zugelost und kommen erst im ⅛ Finale gegen 1 bis 8
5. Position 17 bis 32 können überall in die offenen Plätze zugelost werden.

Eine öffentliche Auslosung – entweder in der Anlage, beim Notar, live im Internet … – gehört zu einem hochwertigen Turnier. Dadurch steigt die Spannung, es führt zu Überraschungen und macht das Turnier viel interessanter. Vielleicht machen alle anderen Nationen das falsch? Oder hat die Deutsche Einzelmeisterschaft evtl. keinen großen Stellenwert in Deutschland?

Hauptsache, es läuft ohne großen Aufwand und „regelmäßig“!
